Hello Hawk Parents! I need your help: This year our goal is to have at least 20% of our parents complete our Parent Survey. Currently, we have 874 students (including Pre-K). So, we’re looking to have 176 parents complete the survey. The survey is located on the HTE website, at http://htes.osceolaschools.net/. Look to the right and it’s under School News. Just click the link to begin. This anonymous survey is important feedback from you, a critical stakeholder, as to how Hickory Tree is doing in educating your child. We are working collaboratively to achieve high levels of learning for all students!! PLEASE take time to complete the survey. When we reach 20%, we will spin the Wheel of Doom, which the students love!! THANK YOU for your time and help with achieving our 20% goal! Usually the survey is open for 4 weeks, but I’m going to keep it open until we reach 20%. Staff and students will also take the survey, probably in March.
February begins our testing season with our 4th and 5th graders taking the FSA Writing test at the end of the month. The test is paper-pencil. Students will have 120 minutes to write. Currently, 4th and 5th grade teachers have grouped their grade level students based on what they need to be successful. This allows teachers to work with students who need the same instructional support, for example, focus, evidence, or elaboration. K-3 students continue to practice being readers, writers, and editors as they develop claims, find evidence to support it in the text, and elaborate.
Also, during February, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will continue to master the standards to prepare for the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA), which is their time to show what they know! This year most of the tests will be computer based. The only paper-pencil tests are 3rd grade ELA and 5th grade Science (which is still FCAT 2.0). Computer based tests include: 3rd grade Math, 4th grade ELA and Math, and 5th grade ELA and Math. 3rd grade will test ELA at the end of March. The computer based testing begins Monday, April 10th. 5th grade will finish our testing season with Science the first week in May. Because so much of the testing is computer based and we have three computer labs, entire grade levels will not be testing on the same day. Teachers will communicate with you specific testing days of their class as time draws near. If you have any questions regarding testing, please contact Bev Hutchinson, our Media Specialist and our Test Coordinator or Sandy Laughrey, Assistant Principal and our Test Administrator. As the district prepares for testing season, they have designated the following Wednesdays as no early release: March 1st, April 12th, 19th, 26th, and May 3rd. Students will be dismissed at 3:45.
With the school year half over, I wanted you to know as parents that we are working diligently here at HTE and your children are in “HAWK-TACULAR” hands!! Our mid-year 3rd-5th i-Ready data from the district show that we are fourth in reading and second in math, when comparing us to the other Osceola elementary and K8 schools. When you take out the K8 schools, we are second in reading and first is math…reason to celebrate!! Hickory Tree truly is a “HAWK-TASTIC” place to learn! We are building college and career ready students by instilling a love of learning, developing them into critical thinkers and problem solvers, and having them listen and learn from each other! I am proud to serve as the principal and be a part of this community!
THANK YOU for your support of our January events: HTE Hikes, Literacy Changes our World theme days, our Literacy Under the Stars event, and our spirit night at Meat n Fire! Please see the calendar section for our February events. We’re collecting money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through Pasta for Patients, presented by Olive Garden February 1st-16th. Please be generous! The winning classroom will earn a spaghetti lunch from Olive Garden. There are also many grade levels taking field trips this month. I look forward to seeing you at our next Spirit Night at Chick-Fil-A, Tuesday, February 28th from 5:00-7:00.
The students of HTE have read over 9,000 MyOn books so we spun the Wheel of Doom. It landed on Dr. V eating some yummy crickets…wish me luck!! They are working on reaching their 12,000 goal so we can spin again. Don’t forget we’ll also spin again when we get 20% of our parents to complete the Parent Survey!
Your support and partnership is greatly appreciated!!
HAWKS SOAR...high levels of learning!
