principal's message

I want to begin with a “HAWK-TASTIC SHOUT-OUT” to the staff of HTE!  The first week of May is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week and we have the best in the county working here at Hickory Tree Elementary!  I greatly appreciate their time, dedication, and hard work to make teaching and learning the priority each day!  It is an honor to serve as the principal and work alongside staff members that I hold in such high regard.  There are special things planned for the staff each day as a token of appreciation.  I also encourage you to express your gratitude and appreciation.  We collaborate, hold high expectations, and work long hours to achieve high levels of learning for all!  To me, there is no greater place to be than HTE!!!  I hope you feel the same.

We can almost celebrate the end of testing season!!  All students are currently taking their Reading and Math Diagnostic #3 test on i-Ready.  Fifth grade will take their paper/pencil FCAT 2.0 Science test Tuesday, May 2nd and Wednesday, May 3rd.  Then, in the middle of the month, some 3rd grade students will take a computer based reading SAT-10 since it is a mandatory retention year for students.  According to section 1008.25(5), Florida Statutes (F.S.), to be promoted to fourth grade, a third-grade student must score a Level 2 or above on the statewide Florida Standards Assessment – English Language Arts (FSA-ELA). The intent of the statute is to ensure that all students have the necessary reading skills to be successful in grade 4 and beyond, where the rigors of reading in the content areas increase.  After the SAT, statewide testing is complete…hooray!!

May is a busy month as the end of school draws near.  Please check the dates on the calendars and student agendas for communication from teachers.  We have a lot to celebrate!  Kindergarten Round-up is scheduled for Thursday, May 4th from 5:30-7:30.  If you have a child that will turn 5 by September 1st, please come to HTE that night to enroll him/her. Spirit Week will occur the week of Monday, May 15th.  Students are invited and encouraged to participate in our HAWK days.  They are:

Monday: Hat Day

Tuesday: Athletic Day

Wednesday: Wacky Sock Day

Thursday: Kooky Hair Day (no dyes)

Friday: Spirit Class Shirt Day (Field Day)

In order to participate in field day on Friday, May 19th all student accounts must be cleared.  This applies to the cafeteria and the media center.  As a school, we’ll also celebrate our year with our last spirit night at Gator’s Dockside on Tuesday, May 16th from 5:00-8:00.  Please join us!  We’ll honor and celebrate our departing 5th grade students with a breakfast on Thursday, May 25th for them.  Parents are invited to their Sweet Farewell in the cafeteria on Thursday, May 25th at 2:15.  Please look for information sent home from your child’s teacher.  I look forward to seeing you participating in May’s activities!

Effective Monday, May 15th the car rider arrival and dismissal traffic pattern will change.  All cars will enter and exit at Hickory Tree Community Park, using a single lane of traffic.  Once at the gates near the covered area, students must exit and enter their vehicles from the passenger side for safety.  Thank you for your flexibility!!  Our kitchen is being renovated and our current traffic pattern interferes with construction.

Report cards will be available for pick up in the front office at Hickory Tree on Monday, June 12th.  If you would like your report card mailed home please send a self-addressed, stamped envelope in with your child prior to the last day of school.  FSA score reports will be mailed with 3-5 students as well so it is recommended that a manila envelope with two stamps be turned in.  K-2 students will be fine with a white envelope and one stamp.  K-4 grade level supply lists will be available in the front office after the last day of school and throughout the summer.  They’ll also be posted on the school’s website.  At Meet Your Teacher, your child’s teacher may request additional items, but the bulk of them will be on the grade level list.

The students of HTE have read over 15,000 MyOn books so the Wheel of Doom was spun.  On Wednesday, April 26th students joined me in the courtyard to watch Ms. Laughrey and I Whip and Nae.  First, selected students gave us a tutorial.  Then all students danced.  It was fun!!  I’ve challenged the students to read 18,000 MyOn books to spin the wheel one more time.  I really want it to land on getting cake smashed in my face.  After eating crickets this year, I think I deserve some cake!!

I want to thank you for a “HAWK-RIFFIC” school year!  I appreciate the partnership that we have built as we work together to have your child love learning!!  It’s “HAWK-CREBILE” to work with a community that is engaged and supportive of their child’s education.

You will be missed this summer!  There will be June and July messages from me on our website so please check it throughout the summer for updates.  You are wished a relaxing and fun summer, which includes reading and learning!!
